Tesla Redesigns Door Handles for Improved Safety

Tesla is taking steps to address safety concerns related to its door handles, which have been criticized for potentially trapping people inside the company’s cars. According to a report by Bloomberg News, Tesla’s chief designer, Franz von Holzhausen, revealed that the company is “working on” redesigning its door handles to make them less likely to cause such issues.

The announcement comes on the heels of an investigation launched by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) into Tesla’s door handles, as well as a Bloomberg News investigation that highlighted multiple instances of owners or passengers being stuck in their cars following a crash. The NHTSA probe was initiated after the agency received nine complaints from Tesla owners who experienced door handle failures, with four of those cases resulting in owners having to break a window to regain entry into the vehicle.

Safety Concerns and Proposed Solutions

One of the primary issues with Tesla’s current door handles is their reliance on electronic locks, which can malfunction if they are not receiving power from the car’s battery system. Additionally, the manual door releases built into Tesla’s cars are often difficult to find and access. To address these concerns, von Holzhausen suggested combining the electronic and manual door release mechanisms into a single button, which he believes “makes a lot of sense.” This proposed solution aims to provide a more reliable and user-friendly way to exit the vehicle in emergency situations.

It’s worth noting that China has already been pushing automakers to reconsider the use of fully concealed door handles due to safety concerns, although the country’s top regulator has not taken final action. Tesla’s decision to redesign its door handles may be seen as a proactive step to address these concerns and ensure the safety of its customers.

Regulatory Scrutiny and Customer Safety

The NHTSA investigation and Bloomberg News report have brought attention to the potential risks associated with Tesla’s door handles. While Tesla’s owner’s manuals do provide instructions on how to use an outside power source to activate dead electronic door locks, the agency noted that none of the owners who contacted them reported seeing low-voltage battery warnings, which would have indicated the cause of the problem. This highlights the need for clearer guidance and more intuitive safety features in Tesla’s vehicles.

As the automotive industry continues to evolve, manufacturers must prioritize customer safety and adapt to changing regulatory requirements. Tesla’s decision to redesign its door handles demonstrates the company’s commitment to addressing safety concerns and providing a better experience for its customers.
