TikTok Deal Takes Shape as Trump Administration Reveals New Details
The Trump administration has been actively discussing a potential deal involving TikTok, with President Donald Trump recently sharing updates on the situation. In a conversation with Fox News on Sunday, Trump mentioned that Rupert Murdoch and his son Lachlan are likely to be involved in the deal, stating “A man named Lachlan is involved… Rupert [Murdoch] is probably gonna be in the group, I think they’re going to be in the group.”
Additionally, Trump revealed that Oracle executive chairman Larry Ellison and Dell Technologies CEO Michael Dell are also expected to participate in the deal. Although the president did not specify whether he was referring to personal or company investments, a report by Deadline suggests that Fox Corp, owned by the Murdoch family, is in talks to join the investor group backing TikTok’s U.S. spinoff from its parent company, ByteDance.
White House Shares Details on the Proposed Agreement
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt appeared on Fox News on Saturday, stating that an agreement has been reached, although not yet signed, which would result in TikTok’s U.S. operations being spun out under majority American ownership. According to Leavitt, Americans will hold six of seven board seats in the restructured TikTok, and the app’s algorithm will be controlled by the U.S. As reported by Bloomberg, Leavitt emphasized that “all of those details have already been agreed upon, now we just need this deal to be signed and that will be happening, I anticipate, in the coming days.”
Bloomberg also reported that new investors in TikTok will include Oracle, Andreessen Horowitz, and private equity firm Silver Lake Management, with Oracle responsible for the app’s security and safety. Furthermore, it is expected that ByteDance will own less than 20% of the spun-off company. A federal bill passed last year had initially aimed to ban TikTok in January, but the deadline was repeatedly extended by Trump, allowing time for a deal to be reached.
International Involvement and Approval
Trump stated on Friday that China’s President Xi Jinping had approved the deal, and TikTok issued a statement thanking both Xi and Trump “for their efforts to preserve TikTok in the United States.” The company assured that “ByteDance will work in accordance with applicable laws to ensure TikTok remains available to American users through TikTok U.S.” The developments in the TikTok deal have significant implications for the app’s future in the U.S. and its users.
