According to Altman, the initial restrictions were put in place to ensure the chatbot was being careful with mental health issues. With the introduction of age-gating and the “treat adult users like adults” principle, OpenAI aims to provide a more personalized experience for its users.

In response to concerning stories about ChatGPT’s impact on vulnerable users, OpenAI released a series of safety features, including an age prediction system and parental controls. The company also launched GPT-5, a new AI model that exhibits lower rates of sycophancy and features a router to identify concerning user behavior. Despite these efforts, it is unclear whether users are still falling down delusional rabbit holes with GPT-5, and the AI model is still available and being used by thousands of people.
The introduction of erotica in ChatGPT raises broader concerns around how vulnerable users will interact with the new features. While Altman insists that OpenAI isn’t “usage-maxxing” or optimizing for engagement, making ChatGPT more erotic could certainly draw users in. Other AI chatbot providers, such as Character.AI, have seen success with this approach, with users spending an average of two hours a day talking to their chatbots.
