Amazon to Resume Drone Delivery Service in Arizona Following Crash
Amazon is set to restart its drone delivery service in Arizona, beginning Friday, despite an ongoing investigation into a crash that occurred earlier this week. The company suspended operations in the West Valley of the Phoenix Metro area, its only commercial market, after two of its Prime Air delivery drones collided with a crane near its same-day site in Tolleson, Arizona, causing them to crash to the ground.
According to Amazon, the company has been delivering packages weighing up to five pounds to customers via its Prime Air drone service in the West Valley of Phoenix since November 2024. The program aims to use drones to deliver 500 million packages per year by the end of the decade, but it has faced several setbacks, including the departure of key executives and a mid-air collision involving two of its models in Oregon in December 2024.
Investigation and Safety Measures
The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration have announced that investigations into the crash are underway. Amazon spokesperson Terrence Clark stated that the company will continue to support “ongoing reviews by relevant agencies” and has completed its own internal review of the incident. Clark expressed confidence that there was no issue with the drones or the technology that supports them, but the company has introduced additional processes, such as enhanced visual landscape inspections, to better monitor for moving obstructions like cranes.
Amazon has also made significant progress in its drone delivery program, including receiving approval from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration to fly its delivery drones longer distances. This approval, granted in May 2024, removed one regulatory hurdle, allowing Amazon to expand its Prime Air service. The company has previously announced plans to expand Prime Air delivery services in Texas, Detroit, and Kansas City.
Challenges and Future Plans
Despite the challenges it has faced, Amazon remains committed to its drone delivery program. The company has scored several wins, including the successful delivery of packages to customers in the West Valley of Phoenix. As the program continues to evolve, Amazon will likely face further challenges, but its dedication to safety and innovation will be crucial in overcoming these obstacles.
