With a background as an early Google employee, Hammer drew inspiration from the company’s 20% project policy, which encourages employees to dedicate 20% of their work time to side projects. PopWheels’ primary focus is on providing battery packs for food delivery bikes, but the team soon realized that connecting these batteries to food carts could be a game-changer.
A Sustainable Solution for Food Carts
Hammer acknowledges that e-bike packs might not be the perfect energy source for food carts, but he emphasizes the importance of solving distribution and charging logistics. PopWheels has already established a network of 30 charging cabinets across Manhattan, primarily serving gig workers who ride e-bikes. This decentralized fleet allows the company to stock a limited number of battery types, making it easier to manage and maintain the system.
Many delivery workers travel long distances to reach Manhattan, which can quickly drain their batteries. In response, some bodegas have started offering e-bike charging services for a monthly fee of $100. However, when factoring in battery wear and tear, the total cost can reach up to $2,000 per year. PopWheels offers a more affordable solution, charging customers $75 per month for unlimited access to their network, with a long waitlist of interested clients.
