Netflix Explores New Content Types with Vertical Video Experiments
Netflix is venturing into vertical video as a means to experiment with new content types, according to Elizabeth Stone, the company’s CTO, who spoke at the TechCrunch Disrupt 2025 conference. Stone emphasized that Netflix does not intend to directly compete with apps like TikTok or other short-form drama apps, but rather aims to leverage the mobile platform in innovative ways.
The executive acknowledged that consumers have different preferences when it comes to content consumption, sometimes seeking longer-form content like TV shows or movies, while at other times opting for “something more snackable.” To cater to these diverse needs, Netflix is testing a vertical video feed on mobile devices, which Stone described as an effort to “reimagine what mobile is” and meet consumers where they are.
Vertical Video Feed and Moments Feature
The vertical video feed, announced earlier this year, allows users to scroll through clips of Netflix’s original titles, with the goal of inspiring users to watch the full show or movie. Additionally, the company’s Moments feature enables users to clip and share their favorite scenes from a show or movie, potentially seeding these short clips into the vertical video feed. Stone hinted at experimenting with “different types of content” and “different ways to clip and share content” within the feed.
Stone emphasized that Netflix is focused on providing a unique entertainment experience, rather than copying or chasing the exact models of other platforms like TikTok. The company aims to leverage its strengths in providing high-quality, engaging content, while also exploring new formats and features that enhance the user experience.
Podcast Experiments and Future Plans
Netflix is also experimenting with podcasts, thanks to its recent deal with Spotify to distribute podcasts on its platform. Stone mentioned that the company will use new canvases like vertical video to experiment with new content types, including podcasts, which will be co-exclusive across Netflix and Spotify and available on both mobile and TV. These experiments are expected to roll out in the next few quarters and throughout 2026.
