28″ Tactical Folding Shovel Military Multi-Tool – Entrenching Tool with Pick/Axe/Saw, Carry Case – Portable for Car, Camping,Snow, Hiking, Survival Gear

I bought this 14-in-1 Tactical Multi-Tool Folding Shovel for Dirtbike/MTB trail work such as digging/picking dirt/rocks/roots/ecology blocks, and whacking brush and tree limbs. I want to prevent ruining my 40-year-old simple stamped steel folding shovel and had planned on carrying it in my backpack riding to the work site.Buuuuuuuuuutttttttttt, 3.9 lbs. might not sound so much, but it would double the weight of the backpack I currently wear with my snacks, full 1 liter camelback, 16oz Gatorade, handsaw, tire pump, trail stand, bug spray, spare gloves, 1st aid kit and misc. stuff in it.Luckily, it fits along with my small 5 lb. chainsaw in a battery box on my dirtbike’s rear rack.I feel that this thing will be indestructible for my intended uses.The reason it weighs so much is because it’s all STEEL, the shovel, pick, tools, and all 3 handles. The fittings that hold the tools, window breaker, and trowel are aluminum. The locking collar is the only thing plastic.The shovel blade’s size is larger than most and the knife and saw edges are kinda sharp. Most in this size range don’t have a pick. The knife/saw tool is sharp. The screwdriver bit is held in the window breaker end magnetically. It came with a small sheet showing where everything goes together.Pics are of previous work using the old shovel and a tire-iron. The new Multi-tool should make this a lot easier!

This shovel is the real deal! At 3.5lbs it’s not very suitable for backpacking but for car camping, a truck/auto shovel, emergency or bug out kit, it’s extremely compact and one of the sturdiest compact shovels I’ve owned.What I love most?- Solid heavy steel construction, a thick durable blade that can stand up to hard use with enough weight to it that the shovel can do much of the work for you. The grips are also very comfortable.- The little “ice pick” attachment! I haven’t tried it for ice breaking yet, but for a dakota fire pit, latrine, post hole digger, close quarter pick type tasks, ect… it’s outstanding!!The actual pick end I have mixed feelings about. It’s flat formed folded steel. The top is fairly blunt and I would have preferred a more robust solid and pointed pick, but then again, the folded lip on the pick does act to help “shovel” away dirt as you pull it toward you. For water drain line trenching around a tent (or similar type tasks), where not much of a trench is required, the pick action is extremely well suited. It certainly does work well breaking up and clearing a dakota fire pit as well.On the other hand, for traditional pick axe type tasks it’s not especially well suited.My main gripe?- The window breaker end piece. With a small shovel I often place my hand on the end of the handle and that sharp tip is extremely uncomfortable. Your usage and mileage may vary but I’ve never needed a window breaker, I have other tools with glass breakers, wouldn’t think to grab my shovel if I ever did need one, so I used my bench grinder to remove that sharp tip.The accessories? Meh… LOLIf nothing else is available they are better than nothing, but very cheap and not for regular use.- The knife edge might be able to cut you out of a wet paper bag, but not much else. It did sharpen up okay, but took quite a lot of work.- The screwdriver bit doesn’t fit snuggly in the end cap holder and will want to fall out on you. It can’t be stored in the handle without falling out or rattling around in the tube when the shovel is assembled.- The ferro rod and whistle piece can’t be stored in the handle when the shovel is not in use. It protrudes to far out of the end of the handle piece and the storage bag won’t close over it.- The ferro rod itself is very hard. Making it difficult to throw much of a spark or to easily produce ferro shavings for a large ignition.- The hex bolt cutouts on the blade are rather worthless. Both are the exact same size and seem more of an afterthought.**Conclusion: If you’re looking for a simple heavy duty multi angle shovel in a highly compact form factor, this shovel is outstanding!! If your priority is an all around survival type all in one shovel then… meh. The “survival” type accessories and features of this shovel seem to be more of an afterthought and a bit gimmicky.All in all (and after a slight modification) I’m extremely happy with it and that “ice breaker” really seals the deal for my uses.[Star rating explained: The survival accys and window breaker would have knocked off a star or two for me, but is offset by just how durable it is for it’s primary purpose, the usefulness and uniqueness of the “ice breaker” tip and the overall value in such a compact form factor.]

When this first showed up I was surprised by how heavy it was. Then, after taking it out of the pouch and assembling it made sense why. A lot of what this shovel does well requires quite a bit of force. Whether chopping wood, using the pick, or even shoveling in hard soil, they all need you to put a lot of force on the handle. Thankfully the handle and head are both pretty thick material that should have a very hard time bending. I did have an issue with the grips rotating while using the shovel which is why one star came off. If you are ok with the weight this shovel is definitely worth considering.
