Handy wee torch for up in the loft and cupboard under the stairs and useful for the occasional power cut. Like that it’s both a dynamo wind up and solar powered torch. Affordable too.

This torch is perfect for that.To give the torch the best test possible, I decided to leave it running to drain all the power that was in it from when it was received. This was so I could try to test the two charging methods that the instruction manual says are available.The first charging method is to use the “dynamo” and crank the handle to build up a battery charge. The manual says that cranking the handle for one minute, with two rotations of the handle per second will put enough charge into the battery to provide full light for 8 minutes. So I tested this and to my surprise, you do actually get 8 minutes of light from one minute of cranking the charging handle. You also get quite a decent workout on your wrist and arm! Admittedly, the amount of light provided by the torch towards the end of the 8 minutes was a lot lower than the beginning of the 8 minutes, but I had fully depleted the battery prior to the test. There was sufficient light provided by that one minute hand crank to enable you to find things like keys, or a spare fuse, change a light bulb etc. If you were to use the hand crank method to charge the torch prior to needing to use it, you would probably find it easier to do one minute of cranking, then stop for around 10-15 minutes then crank again for a minute and take a break again as it is pretty tiring to do.The second method of charging is via the solar panel in the side of the torch. If you put the torch into direct sunlight with the solar panel showing for 30 minutes, the torch is supposed to absorb enough solar power into it’s battery to give it 30 minutes of power. Unfortunately, it’s mid-September in the UK as I write this and it’s been exceptionally dull for the last few days, so I am not able to test the solar panel properly – but that is where the hand crank comes in, if it’s too dark for solar power, crank the handle and charge the torch, and I think that will be my preferred method overall.The torch has 3 LED diodes that provide the illumination, those diodes are behind a plastic lens that is designed to magnify the amount of light provided. When the torch is fully charged, you do get a very good amount of light from it. The manual does say that if the torch is fully charged, you should get 120 minutes (2 hours) of continuous light from it.At the time of review, the torch is selling for £7.99 and I think it’s very good value at that price – especially due to the bonus of a decent wrist/arm workout when charging it!
